Youth of the Philippines!
Oh
youth of the Philippines, hope of the motherland, the time has come to
awaken from your slumber. The season of complacency and apathy has
passed. Shake off the shackles of addictions that bind and leave you
helpless. Break free from the chains of drugs, sex and violence. Ignite
your dreams that were snuffed out, gather your ambitions that were
trampled.
Rise from the ashes of poverty. Rise from the low expectations of our elders. Rise from the grave of corruption and greed. Awaken hope. Awaken faith. Awaken life. We were born for a bright horizon. We were born, the future of our motherland.
Let us not just hope for a better tomorrow. But let us together work to make that longing a reality. Let us take up the torch of our forefathers and echo their cries for justice, freedom and equality. They shed their blood for freedom from foreign oppressor, but we fight for freedom against our very own flesh and blood.
We are the future and we must fight for the oppressed who were not given justice due to their lack of finances. We must fight for the blood of innocents whose slayers were acquitted. We must fight for the orphans who were abused and left on the streets. We must fight against the hunger and poverty that threatens to steal our dreams and dash our futures. We must fight against dragons who pocket the taxes meant to build our nation.
How do we fight? Not through rallies, arms or force but through change. But how can we fight when we ourselves refuse to change? Change does not begin in the realm of the elite. It starts in the daily grind of life. The routines that we find ourselves in. Change starts with the little things we are complacent about. Jesus himself declared that if we are faithful with the little things we will be put in charge of bigger things. How can we expect our nation to change when we don’t even follow the simple rules of our land? We jaywalk when there is a huge sign forbidding us to cross. We throw garbage on the streets. We tempt our officials by offering bribes to speed the process or avoid a penalty. We have no integrity, no character, no fear of authority or the consequences. No wonder we hang our heads and are trampled left and right.
Change does not begin with other people, it begins with us. We are the solution. Just because things have always been the way they are, does not mean they cannot change. Change in our nation will begin when individuals step out in courage to go against the status quo. Individuals who are not afraid to say enough is enough. We are better than this. Change in our nation will begin when we humble ourselves, cry out to God, acknowledge our faults, embrace discipline and walk in integrity.
If we adhere to this we will make our land the pride of her people. We will be able to lift our heads and bear without shame the badge of the Philippines before the congregation of the world. Let them watch as the pearl of the orient rises from the ashes of testing into the skies of opportunity. Hand in hand we can make this possible. Hand in hand we can awaken, we can arise.
