Actors on the Stage of Life

We are all liars, frauds, impostors.

“How are you?” asks someone with a smile. “I’m okay.” you reply smiling back.

You turn to go. Turmoil rises and you want to scream, “Actually, I’m HORRIBLE!” But you are afraid. Afraid that person WON’T care. Afraid that they WILL care. Afraid they will try to FIX YOU UP. Afraid what they may THINK. Afraid, afraid, afraid....

We all have hid behind masks. Too terrified to reveal the sorrow and brokenness we are concealing. Horrified to expose our flaws and short comings. We want to be perceived as strong, on top of the world with everything under control. We don’t allow ourselves to be comforted by the fact that everyone has their weak moments. For Samson it was when he was in the arms of the beautiful Delilah. For Achilles it was when his heel was exposed to danger. It is easier to brush people off than explain what is really going on. To allow them a glimpse of our souls.

But how long will this act last? When will pretending cease? When will all the little things pile up and finally erupt? When will we NOT care about the opinions of others? When will we allow our masks to fall from our hands and be seen as we truly are? Weak, flawed, hurt, misunderstood, insecure, desperate, hopeless yet trying day by day to live life to the fullest. Trying to touch lives and bring happiness to others, a happiness we are not experiencing.

We are all liars, frauds, impostors.

The curtain has closed. The act has come to an end.

  1. i am glad to say Im not as plastic as what you have stated. I do have times that I just smile and say Im OK cuz I dnt have a choice but to b OK. I rather express myself to real friends like yourself and others. If we walk around without our masks it may knock us down too much and get to the point that we dont want to get up. Masks is a protection from people that want to hurt us or use us. My masks are off with the people I trust and even with people I just meet until I know when to put on my famous fake smile!! LOL!!
